Company History

Founded in 1951, Stanhope Company soon became a major interior contractor in Los Angeles. Starting in what was then the business core from 2nd St. to 8th St. between Spring Street and Flower; Stanhope renovated and provided tenant improvements for many of the City’s historic buildings. During this period the company helped develop many of the interior construction techniques and procedures in use today.

In the 1960’s John R. Gaudino led the expansion of the firm which prepared it for the construction boom of the 1970’s and 80’s. Those decades, starting with the Union bank and City National Bank buildings in 1967 saw the shift of prime office tenants from the Spring Street financial district to the new high rises to the west. The completion of the Arco Towers in 1971 cemented the change and provided the base for the new Figueroa corridor business center. Completion of the Security Pacific Bank tower on top of Bunker Hill in 1974 was the culmination of the Community redevelopment Agency’s long effort to renovate that deteriorated residential neighborhood and provided the northern anchor for the financial district along the Figueroa Street/Bunker Hill axis.

During this period Stanhope Company brought its team of craftsmen, superintendents and project managers whose experience gained in the challenging environments of the older office buildings to the task of creating acres of new office space in gleaming towers of the new business center. Expertise in fire sprinkler and other modern life safety systems was added to our repertoire. These decades also saw the Company’s sphere of operations expand to include the new business centers in Irvine, Century City, West Los Angeles, Universal City, Woodland Hills and Long Beach.

As the 1980’s drew to a close and the new building expansion began to slow, a few owners and developers noticed that some buildings of great architectural merit had been bypassed and virtually abandoned in the race to newer buildings. Starting with the Oviatt Building in 1985 and continuing with the Fine Arts Building, Wiltern Theater, Chapman Park Market and many others Stanhope Company had the opportunity to restore some of the landmark buildings of Los Angeles to their former glory. With the dramatic construction downturn in the early 1990’s, the emphasis again shifted. Office remodeling and downsizing, base building modernization (including fire, seismic, life safety and ADA retrofits) and specialty projects filled the void left from new construction.

As the 90’s came to a close and the new millennium began, Stanhope Company became more involved in Southern California’s Airline industry completing numerous projects at LAX, John Wayne Airport, Long Beach and Burbank Airports for some of the largest Airline companies like American, Virgin and Alaskan to name a few while continuing to maintain relationships with architects, building owners and faithful clients in the commercial Tenant Improvement industry throughout Los Angeles and surrounding counties. Throughout our six and a half decades regardless of the trends in real estate or construction, regardless of the types of projects in which we were engaged, Stanhope Company has brought the same promise to our clients- a commitment to honest, efficient, quality construction services, on time.
